In an era where deception feels omnipresent, few things are more gratifying than calling out a deceiver for what they truly are. Sometimes, that reckoning comes with calm, measured precision–like we witnessed earlier this week–but other times, the weight of frustration, resentment, and pure disgust demands something louder: a guttural scream of “Liar!” for instance, which we welcome with open ears on “Servant,” the new single from White Beast. Accompanied by a feverish, tightly-controlled music video that amplifies the song’s palpable rage, this song serves as the lead single from the band’s upcoming EP Home Alone, due out April 11th via Sockhead Records.

The Richmond, Virginia bass-and-drums duo White Beast are a very new project; they just released their debut single “Fencewalker” a few months ago. If you’ve never heard of them, don’t feel bad; I didn’t know anything about the band until drummer Sam Roberts, also of the excellent metal-punk band Private Hell, told me about them at a Gorilla Biscuits show. But White Beast have already put out their full-length debut Suffering Time, and that shit goes hard.

White Beast are a new Richmond duo who make a grungy, guttural, psychedelic version of sludge-rock on nothing but bass and drums. (Their bandcamp tags include the genre names “post butt rock” and “anarcho buttrock,” both of which are, in my opinion, funny.) Drummer Sam Roberts has played in punk bands like Fried Egg and Private Hell, and I only know about White Beast because he told me about them at a Gorilla Biscuits show on Friday. Singer/bassist Jeffrey Rettberg used to be in the Baltimore band Beachmover, and he released an EP with a different drummer under the White Beast name a couple of years ago.
